When your air conditioner is running but not cooling

It’s never good to discover a problem with your air conditioner when you need it most. Is your air conditioning running but not cooling? Something is certainly wrong. Diagnosing AC issues is best left to the professionals; however, there are a few things you can check yourself.

Here are things that can cause that issue:

Your thermostat settings are wrong

The first thing to check is your thermostat settings. Is it set to cool? Sometimes it could be accidentally set to heat. What temperature is it set to? If it’s not, switch it to cool and adjust the temperature. Next, wait a few minutes to see if cool air starts coming through the vents. If it doesn’t, you may have an electrical problem in the thermostat or another unresolved issue.

The air filter is dirty

Next, check the air filter. You should change the air filter every three months. If you can’t remember the last time you checked or replaced it, there is a good chance that the filter is clogged. Remember, the air filter’s job is to catch dirt, dust, and other airborne particles. Eventually, too much dirt accumulates within the filter and blocks airflow.

Refrigerant is leaking

Your air conditioner cannot cool without refrigerant. If you have a refrigerant leak, the AC will not have enough refrigerant to cool the air. Trust the professional HVAC technicians at Fagnan’s Furnace Service to repair it.

Your air conditioner is the wrong size or improperly installed

Sometimes, the problem is your air conditioner itself. If you're encountering cooling problems, it could be because your air conditioner was not installed properly. Or, you bought an air conditioner too small for your home. The sizing of an air conditioner is critically important, but you may not realize there’s been a mistake until temperatures begin to rise. A qualified HVAC professional can diagnose an undersized air conditioner and recommend a better model.

Your air conditioner is too old

Air conditioners last for 15-20 years but only if they have been well-maintained. Regardless, you should pay close attention to the performance of your air conditioner when it gets to be around 15 years old. It may be time for a replacement when it fails to keep your home cool.
